The Wives of Zeus
The Divine Marriages of the King of Gods
Before Hera, Zeus had several wives whose children became essential deities. Metis, Titaness of wisdom, was his first wife — swallowed when a prophecy warned their son would surpass Zeus. She was pregnant with Athena, who was born from Zeus's skull. Themis bore the Horae (Seasons) and the Moirai (Fates). Eurynome bore the three Charites (Graces). Mnemosyne bore the nine Muses after Zeus lay with her for nine consecutive nights.
Hera was his final and permanent wife. Their marriage was famously turbulent — Zeus's infidelities and Hera's relentless vengeance drove much of the mythological tradition. Hera punished Zeus's lovers rather than Zeus himself, reflecting the power dynamics of divine marriage.
