Gods and Gamers
Greek mythology has become one of the richest sources of inspiration for video game developers. The combination of powerful gods, heroic quests, terrifying monsters, and tragic stories provides perfect material for interactive entertainment. From AAA blockbusters to indie darlings, Greek myths have shaped some of the most acclaimed games ever made.
God of War Series (2005–Present)
Santa Monica Studio's God of War franchise is perhaps the most famous mythology-based game series. The original trilogy follows Kratos (sharing a name with the mythological god of strength) as he rages against the Greek gods. The series reimagines Olympus as a corrupt hierarchy that Kratos tears down through sheer fury.
While the games take enormous liberties with the source material — Kratos kills virtually every god in the pantheon — they introduce millions of players to figures like Zeus, Ares, Poseidon, Hades, and Athena.
Hades by Supergiant Games (2020)
Supergiant's roguelike masterpiece Hades is arguably the most mythologically faithful and critically acclaimed mythology game ever made. Players control Zagreus, the son of Hades, attempting to escape the Underworld.
What makes Hades special is how deeply it understands the source material. The characterization of gods like Aphrodite, Artemis, and Dionysus feels authentic to their mythological personalities while being thoroughly modern. The game's themes of family conflict, destiny, and belonging are genuinely Greek in spirit.
Other Notable Games
Assassin's Creed Odyssey (2018) — Set in 431 BCE during the Peloponnesian War, this open-world game lets players explore a stunning recreation of ancient Greece. The DLC 'Fate of Atlantis' dives deep into mythology with visits to Elysium, the Underworld, and Atlantis.
Immortals Fenyx Rising (2020) — A colorful action-adventure inspired by Greek myths, featuring Typhon's attempt to overthrow the gods. Lighter in tone but surprisingly faithful to the source stories.
Apotheon (2015) — A side-scrolling action game with art styled after ancient Greek pottery painting. One of the most visually unique takes on mythology in gaming.
Titan Quest (2006) — An action RPG that lets players battle mythological creatures across ancient Greece, Egypt, and China.
Why Greek Myths Work So Well in Games
Greek mythology maps perfectly onto game design. The hero's journey structure provides natural progression. Monsters serve as bosses. Gods offer power-ups and quest-givers. The underworld is the ultimate dungeon. And the myths' themes of overcoming impossible odds resonate with every player who's ever faced a difficult challenge.
As game technology advances, expect even more ambitious mythological worlds — perhaps one day we'll explore a fully realized Mount Olympus in virtual reality.
More games built on Greek myth
Age of Mythology (2002). Ensemble Studios' real-time strategy game lets players pick a patron god (Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades for the Greeks) and summon myth units such as minotaurs, centaurs, and the Hydra. Its campaign follows Arkantos, an invented Atlantean hero, through Troy and the Underworld. A remake, Age of Mythology: Retold, came out in 2024.
Zeus: Master of Olympus (2000). A city-builder from Impressions Games in which you build temples and sanctuaries and win the favour of the gods, with heroes such as Perseus and Heracles arriving to deal with monsters. Its expansion, Poseidon, adds Atlantis.
Kid Icarus (1986) and Kid Icarus: Uprising (2012). Nintendo's series stars the winged angel Pit and borrows loosely from myth: Medusa is the first game's villain, and Uprising features Hades, Poseidon, Thanatos, Pandora, and Palutena, a goddess of light invented for the series.
Hades II (2025). Supergiant's sequel, released in early access in 2024 and in full in 2025, follows Melinoë, princess of the Underworld, in a war against Cronus. Melinoë is a genuinely ancient figure, but obscure: she is known almost entirely from one Orphic Hymn, which calls her a daughter of Persephone. See the Hades II mythology guide.
Smite (2014). Hi-Rez's multiplayer arena game has the Greek pantheon alongside Norse, Egyptian, Hindu, Chinese, and Maya gods, which makes it a handy way to compare how different traditions imagined similar roles.
What the games get right and what they invent
Hades. Zagreus, the player character, is a real but murky figure. In fragments of Aeschylus and other early poets he is connected with the Underworld, sometimes seemingly identified with Hades himself. In the later Orphic tradition he is the son of Zeus and Persephone, torn apart by the Titans and reborn as Dionysus. The game makes him the son of Hades and Persephone, which is an invention, but it fits his chthonic associations. Nyx raising him is also original to the game. The scenes with Achilles and Patroclus are well grounded: in the Iliad Patroclus' ghost asks for their ashes to be mixed in one urn. Placing Achilles in the Underworld follows Odyssey 11, where he tells Odysseus he would rather be a living labourer than king of all the dead. Another tradition, preserved in summaries of the lost epic Aethiopis, has Thetis carry him off to the White Island in the Black Sea. See the Hades game guide.
God of War. Kratos is original to the games, although the name means "strength" in Greek and belongs to a minor god, the brother of Bia, Nike, and Zelus. See Kratos and Bia. The first game's quest for Pandora's Box uses the modern "box" rather than Hesiod's jar. The series is closer to the myths in its monsters (Hydra, Medusa, Cyclopes, Cerberus) than in its gods, whose personalities are reworked to serve a revenge story. Ares really was disliked by the other gods: in the Iliad Zeus tells him he is the most hateful of all the Olympians.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The historical layer is the game's strength: Perikles, Sokrates, Aspasia, Herodotus, and Hippokrates all appear, and the map recreates sanctuaries such as Olympia and Delphi. The mythological creatures in the main game (the Minotaur, Medusa, the Cyclops, the Sphinx) are framed as products of advanced technology rather than gods. See our AC Odyssey guide.
Using games as a way into the sources
Players who love these games often find the ancient texts more accessible than expected, because the stories are already familiar. A good pairing: play Hades and then read Odyssey 11, where Odysseus meets the dead, and Book 6 of Virgil's Aeneid, with its tour of Tartarus and Elysium. After Immortals Fenyx Rising, Hesiod's account of Zeus' battle with Typhon in the Theogony is short and vivid. After God of War, Euripides' Heracles is worth reading: a hero driven mad by Hera kills his own wife and children, a story with obvious parallels to Kratos' backstory.
The same caution applies to games as to films: they build a version that suits play, and it is worth checking the sources before quoting a detail as myth. Our movies and TV page covers the same issue on screen.

Frequently asked questions
Which Greek mythology video game is the most accurate?
Hades is usually considered the most faithful in spirit, with well-researched characters and many references to ancient sources, though its family tree is invented in places. Assassin's Creed Odyssey is the most accurate about the historical world, but not the myths.
Is Zagreus a real Greek god?
Yes, though he appears mainly in fragments and in the Orphic tradition, where he is the son of Zeus and Persephone who is reborn as Dionysus. The Hades game makes him the son of Hades.
Is Kratos from God of War in Greek mythology?
Not as a Spartan warrior. The mythological Kratos is the personification of strength, who with his sister Bia chains Prometheus to the rock in Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound.
What game should I play to learn Greek mythology?
Hades is the best balance of entertainment and source knowledge, with Age of Mythology good for a broad cast of gods and monsters. Pair either with the Odyssey or a solid retelling to check the details.
