Greek Heroes List

Every Hero Ranked

From Heracles to Theseus — every Greek hero, their quests, and what made them legendary.

The Complete Guide

Greek mythology features hundreds of named figures — each with their own stories, symbols, and significance. This comprehensive guide organizes every major figure for quick reference, whether you're studying for a class, writing a paper, or simply exploring the myths.

The Major Figures

At the top of the mythological hierarchy sit the twelve Olympian gods, who ruled from Mount Olympus after overthrowing the Titans. Below them are the minor gods, primordial deities, Titans, heroes, and the countless nymphs, spirits, and monsters that populated the ancient Greek imagination.

Origins and Genealogy

Nearly every figure in Greek mythology can trace their lineage back to the primordial beings — Chaos, Gaia, and Uranus. Understanding these family connections is essential to understanding why certain gods allied with or against each other, and why specific heroes were destined for greatness or tragedy.

Symbols and Domains

Each deity and mythological figure is associated with specific symbols, animals, plants, and domains of influence. These symbols were not merely decorative — they represented the fundamental powers and responsibilities of each figure, and were used in worship, art, and storytelling throughout the ancient world.

Cultural Significance

These figures were not merely characters in stories — they were the foundation of ancient Greek religion, philosophy, and identity. Temples were built in their honor, festivals celebrated their deeds, and their names were invoked in everything from marriage ceremonies to battle cries. Understanding these figures means understanding the civilization that gave birth to Western culture.

The Heroes Before Troy

Greek myth arranges its heroes roughly by generation. The oldest heroic stories belong to the founders and monster-slayers who lived a generation or more before the Trojan War.

The Heroes of the Trojan War and After

What "Hero" Meant to the Greeks

A Greek hērōs was not necessarily brave or good. The word described a person of the distant past, often with one divine parent, who was believed to retain power after death. Hesiod's Works and Days describes a whole "race of heroes", the demigods who fought at Thebes and Troy, some of whom were carried off to the Isles of the Blessed. Heroes received cult at their tombs, called heroa, with offerings poured into the earth rather than burnt for the sky gods.

Because a hero's bones were thought to protect a city, recovering them was a political act. Herodotus reports that the Spartans, told by the Delphic oracle they could not beat Tegea without the bones of Orestes, found and carried them home. Plutarch says the Athenian general Cimon brought back what were believed to be Theseus' bones from Skyros in the 470s BC.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the greatest Greek hero?

The Greeks themselves usually gave the title to Heracles for his deeds and to Achilles as a warrior. Odysseus is often named greatest for intelligence.

Were there female Greek heroes?

Yes. Atalanta is the clearest example of a woman who hunted and fought among male heroes, and heroines such as Iphigenia and Helen received cult in some places.

Did Greek heroes become gods?

Rarely. Heracles is the main case, taken up to Olympus and married to Hebe. Most heroes died and were honoured at their graves; a few, like Menelaus in the Odyssey, were promised a blessed afterlife in Elysium.

What is the difference between Heracles and Hercules?

None in terms of the figure: Heracles is the Greek name and Hercules the Latin form used by the Romans.
