The Lovers of Zeus
Every Affair of the King of the Gods
Zeus was the most prolific lover in mythology. His affairs produced dozens of children and caused endless conflict with Hera.
Leto bore Apollo and Artemis but was hunted by Hera across the earth. Semele asked to see Zeus's true form and was incinerated — Zeus rescued Dionysus from her ashes. Alcmene bore Heracles when Zeus disguised himself as her husband. Io was transformed into a cow. Europa was abducted by Zeus as a white bull. Leda was visited by Zeus as a swan, producing Helen and the Dioscuri. Danaë received Zeus as a shower of gold, bearing Perseus.
Ganymede was Zeus's only male lover — a Trojan prince carried to Olympus by an eagle to serve as cupbearer. Each affair reveals something about Greek attitudes toward power, desire, and the consequences of divine attention falling on mortals who had no ability to refuse.
