The Premise

Kaos reimagines the Greek gods as modern-day figures running the world from a Crete-like paradise. Zeus (played by Jeff Goldblum) is a paranoid, narcissistic ruler losing his grip on power. The show follows three mortal characters whose fates are intertwined with a prophecy about the gods' downfall.

Zeus — The Paranoid King

Goldblum's Zeus is insecure, vain, and terrified of a prophecy predicting his fall. This actually matches many mythological versions of Zeus — he swallowed Metis because a prophecy said her child would overthrow him, and he's constantly dealing with threats to his power.

Hera — The Schemer

The show's Hera is a political operator working behind the scenes. In mythology, Hera was known for scheming, plotting, and undermining Zeus's affairs. The show captures her intelligence and ambition well.

Prometheus — The Prisoner

True to mythology, Prometheus is imprisoned and punished for giving fire to humanity. The show adds layers to his character but keeps the essential mythology intact — he's the god who suffered eternal punishment for helping humans.

The Underworld

Kaos depicts the afterlife as a bureaucratic system where souls are processed — which is actually a clever update of the mythological concept. The Greeks had Charon (the ferryman), the judges of the dead (Minos, Rhadamanthys, Aeacus), and different zones for different souls.

Eurydice and Orpheus

The show retells the Orpheus and Eurydice myth — one of mythology's greatest love stories. Orpheus descends to the Underworld to rescue his dead wife, and must walk out without looking back. The show reinterprets this with a modern twist.

The Prophecy

Greek mythology is full of self-fulfilling prophecies — Zeus's fear of being overthrown mirrors Cronus's fear of Zeus, which mirrors Uranus's fear of Cronus. Kaos taps into this cyclical pattern brilliantly.
